smoke in the well

1 oz Mezcal (Fidencio)
3/4 oz La Gitana Manzanilla Sherry
3/4 oz Amaro Montenegro
1/2 oz Campari

Stir with ice, strain into an old fashioned glass with a large ice cube, and garnish with a dehydrated orange wheel (orange twist).
Two Sundays ago, I returned to Kindred Cocktails where I became curious about the Smoke in the Well. This recipe from Ba Bar in Seattle circa 2015 was a mezcal and sherry drink with the combination of Amaro Montenegro and Campari that worked rather elegantly in the Monte Cassino and Black Magic. Here, the Smoke in the Well started things off with an orange and smoke aroma. Next, caramel and peach notes on the sip smoldered into smoky, vegetal, and bitter tangerine flavors on the swallow.
